Role of Patient Partners

There are a variety of ways Patient Partners contribute to patient-oriented research (POR), such as partnering on a research project, representing patients on a committee or contributing to the work being done at SCPOR.

In patient-oriented research, Patient Partners are engaged at every stage of the research, from identifying the priorities, and designing, conducting and analyzing surveys to translating the knowledge gained through research and implementing the findings so they can be used in our health systems. There is no one definition of a Patient Partner’s role - each brings their own unique experience and skill set and each project requires different things from different people.

Patient Partners play an important role at SCPOR, as well. They serve on governance committees, representing the voice of people with lived experience and the contribute not only to the development of products and tools, but in also in training others how to use them. As they become experts in POR, from serving on projects or other relevant initiatives, they assist in adjudicating grant applications, presentations at research showcases and more. Patient Partner Honoraria

Patient Partners receive honoraria for their contributions as a show of appreciation. Being a Patient Partner is not a paid position, but rather a volunteer initiative. However, they contribute their time and energy to improve research and make our province a healthier place to live, work and play. SCPOR encourages Patient Partners be compensated and has created guidelines for payment and a system - through Better Impact (BI) - for paying Patient Partners.
